What’s more terrifying than having your parents meet your loved one’s parents? Why having everyone meet in a haunted house, of course! That’s the premise of The Parenting, a star-studded Max Original film that leans into raunchy comedy, among other things.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:
A hilariously terrifying comedy, The Parenting follows young couple Rohan and Josh as they plan a perfect weekend getaway in the country to introduce their parents. As tensions begin to flare between the more traditional Sharon and Frank and the laid-back Liddy and Cliff, the families soon realize that their rental—managed by eccentric local Brenda—is haunted by the presence of a 400-year-old poltergeist. When one parent becomes thoroughly possessed, it’s up to the young couple and their meddlesome BFF Sara to unite the families and stop the evil entity once and for all.
The trailer also gives us glimpses of the impressive ensemble cast. Nik Dodani and Brandon Flynn play the young couple, while their parents are played by Brian Cox (Succession), Edie Falco (The Sopranos), Lisa Kudrow (Friends), and Dean Norris (Breaking Bad). Parker Posey (The White Lotus) and Vivian Bang (Always Be My Maybe) also star in the movie.
Is this film good? The jury is still out, but this clip includes scenes where Norris sticks his finger up a small dog’s butt and has Cox walking around naked pointing to his private parts. Do with that information what you will.
The Parenting is directed by Craig Johnson, with a script by Kent Sublette. It premieres on Max on March 13, 2025.
