The film adaptation of Wicked starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is set to premiere in mere days. If you’re a fan of the musical, however, and want to take your renditions of the score beyond karaoke night or the privacy of your shower, I’ve got good news for you: Starting on December 25, 20204, you can attend a screening of the film and belt your brains out.
According to Variety, special singalong screenings will invade approximately a thousand theaters this holiday season. During the course of Part One’s two hours and forty-one minutes, you can bellow out “Popular,” “Defying Gravity,” “Dancing Through Life,” “The Wizard and I” and “One Short Day.” Other songs, sadly, will have to wait for Part Two to come out in theaters on November 21, 2025, where presumably we’ll also have the dubious pleasure of later attending singlong screenings for other favorites like “For Good” and “No Good Deed.”
The film, of course, is the adaptation of the popular musical (which itself is an adaptation of the popular book, but I digress), where a young Glinda and Elphaba meet at a school in the Land of Oz where, after a meeting with the Wizard of said Oz, take different paths, with Glinda becoming Glinda the Good and Elphaba getting the moniker of the Wicked Witch of the West.
While we still have to wait a bit over a month for the singalong screenings, we’ll be able to keep our mouths shut and watch Wicked: Part One when it premieres in theaters on November 22, 2024.
